Golden Harvest Adopts Green Dot symbol

Malta Independent Monday, 5 October 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Golden Harvest will be putting the Green Dot symbol on the packaging of its range of bakery, confectionery and other products that they manufacture. Golden Harvest is the latest in a string of manufacturers in Malta to put this internationally famous symbol on its products.

“In the coming months, all our packaging will be displaying the Green Dot symbol as testimony of our commitment to the environment,” said Golden Harvest’s production director, Mark Aquilina. “At Golden Harvest Mfg. Co. Ltd, we believe that apart from constantly delivering the freshest and tastiest of products, we want to anticipate our customer’s expectations. The Green Dot symbol is yet another step in that direction.”

Golden Harvest Mfg. Co. Ltd is a Maltese family run company that started out in 1946 as a small traditional bakery in Floriana. The organisation now has over thirteen direct distribution outlets and a fleet of twenty-three delivery vans which ensure that 65,000 bakery products enter Maltese kitchens every day.

During 2008, the organisation’s 60th Anniversary, Golden Harvest transferred all its operations to a new 14,500 sqm plant at San Gwann Industrial Estate. The new premises will mark a new chapter in Golden Harvest’s eventful history as Malta’s pioneers in bakery, confectionery and ice cream manufacturing, which today churns out 65,000 products a day.

In Europe, the Green Dot is used by more than 130,000 companies encompassing 460 billion packages. In Malta the symbol is being increasingly used on products to inform consumers that the manufacturer contributes towards the cost of recovery and recycling of materials put on the Maltese market.

Green Dot Malta Limited issues the license for the use of the mark in Malta. The company also operates the GreenPak scheme which for the past years has been diverting tonnes of waste packaging away from landfill and towards recycling. “Since starting up in 2004, GreenPak has always strived to provide a cost effective solution for the recycling of packaging,” said Ing. Mario Schembri, CEO of Green Dot Malta. “Five years later, the GreenPak scheme still remains the most economically and efficient way for recycling.”

Being part of the international organisation PROEUROPE, which runs schemes in more than 30 countries, GreenPak has brought to Malta tried and tested systems that avoid expensive collections systems.

Today there are some 300 Maltese companies that are signed up with GreenPak. “Big companies with international brands such as Nestlé, Proctor & Gamble, Next, Marks & Spencers, Kinder, Cadbury and many others have adopted the Green Dot mark on their products and are part of GreenPak’s scheme,” said Ing. Schembri. “We are proud to welcome Golden Harvest, one of our major Maltese manufacturers, to the Green Dot family”.
