Colourful Nutella Mug makes the rounds

Malta Independent Monday, 9 November 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Shoppers picking up two Nutella 350gr jars from stores and supermarket shelves will get a free colourful iconic Nutella mug to take home and use at breakfast or tea time.

Nutella is one of Ferrero’s most international brands and after more than 40 years it is now a member of the exclusive club of ‘myth’ brands. Nutella is an icon of pleasure, of youthfulness, and of being together with family and friends. As with all Ferrero snacks and confectionery, it is a high quality nutritious product with no artificial colours or preservatives and a source of Vitamin E

“Nutella represents strong values in the eyes of the consumer, and thanks to its unique taste has won over generations of consumers,” said Clyde Attard, Marketing Manager at P. Cutajar & Co Ltd, representatives of Ferrero. “Its creaminess, its high quality ingredients and its hazelnuts make Nutella one of the most famous and best loved products in the world.”

The first Ferrero hazelnut and cocoa spread was created in the 1940s by pastry maker Pietro Ferrero (founder of the Ferrero company) in Piedmont. The product was known as “pasta gianduja”, “pasta” meaning paste and “gianduja” being a carnival character famous to the region.

This original form of the product was actually made in loaves and wrapped in tinfoil, so it could be sliced and placed on bread for mothers to make sandwiches for their children. Many children would throw away the bread and only eat the pasta gianduja! So Mr Ferrero altered the product into a paste that could be spread on bread and packaged it in a jar. This version came to be known as “Supercrema gianduja” and was eventually renamed NUTELLA® in 1964.
