Nissan: Then and now

Malta Independent Sunday, 6 December 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Nissan knows its origins in 1933, when the original founding company burst on the scene with a production rate that peaked at 20,000 units. Jidosha-Seido Ltd was established in Yokohama by Nikon Sangyo Co. and Tobata Imono Co. The new company was led by the brilliant Yoshisuke Aikawa and took over all operations for manufacturing Datsuns. In 1934, Nihon Sangyo took on sole ownership of the company and renamed it Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

After successfully expanding into the United States and Australia, Nissan finally tackled the European market. In 1962, Nissan began to export vehicles to Europe. Nissan has continued to grow steadily over the years and in 2005 Nissan sold its 10 millionth car in Europe.

With a vast range of models, Nissan is a brand that was born in Japan, sold in Europe but enjoyed everywhere. The “City Cars” line-up of the brand incorporates the Pixo, Micra STAR and Note.

Difficult economic conditions and an increased awareness of environmental issues mean customers are looking for a car that delivers excellent fuel economy and low emissions at a price they can afford. PIXO answers all those needs with a practical package that is refreshingly uncomplicated and comes at a price of only e10,500.

The Nissan Micra is the smart and stylish city car. With the latest introduction of the Micra STAR, Nissan have brought an even smarter version to the market. The Micra STAR comes with well-equipped packages that include many standard features, a three-year warranty on parts and labour and 12 years anti-corrosion warranty. Showroom prices for the Micra STAR start from as low as e12,800.

Combining the interior space of an executive saloon with the agility of a conventional small hatchback, Nissan’s unconventional Note is designed to appeal to the head and the heart. The Nissan Note is a car that is both rational and emotional. On one hand, this is a sensible compact car for families, thanks to its roomy interior and thoughtful features. At the same time, its sporty side is sure to satisfy enthusiasts who seek driving pleasure. As 2010 approaches, Nissan Motor Sales is preparing for another eventful year with the introduction of various new models in its range.

The first one to hit our market will be the long-awaited 370Z. With an enlarged version of the VQ V6 engine, now producing 331PS, and driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox, which is available with the world’s first synchronized down/up shift rev control system, or an all-new paddle-operated seven-speed automatic.

Nissan will also venture into the commercials segment with the importation of the NV200 and other commercial vehicles such as the Cabstar, Interstar and Primastar.
