Malta Independent Saturday, 12 December 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

The Yellow Pages’ participation in the 5th Edition of the Environmental Award for Industry has seen it walking away with an Honourable Mention for the Conservation Award for Sustainable Development. This is Yellow Pages’ second nomination to date in appreciation for the company’s time and effort dedicated to collecting old Yellow Pages books for recycling.

The Environmental Award for Industry is presented every two years by the Cleaner Technology Centre. It recognises and promotes Maltese organisations that have made a significant contribution to sustainable development in our country. It highlights the policies, practices and processes of businesses and other organisations which are helping to achieve economic and social development while minimising the environmental impact of their operations. It also aims to encourage the replication of such environmental good practice.

The awards cover three categories, namely:

A: Management Award for Sustainable Development;

B: Conservation Award for Sustainable Development;

C: Environment Protection Initiative Award for SMEs.

Winners in each category are awarded a specially commissioned trophy made by Mdina Glass and a certificate. Winners of Category A are furthermore assisted to compete in the European Environment Award Programme run by the DG Environment of the European Commission.

Yellow Pages participated in the Sustainable Development Category as it had done in the previous edition of the awards in 2007 where it had also landed the same award and for the same accomplishment. Yellow Pages’ Distribution and Mapping Manager Nicholas Diacono said, “We applied in the category which we felt fits best with our company’s efforts towards environmental issues. Once shortlisted we made a presentation to the Board Members outlining our initiative and work, explaining how we go about collecting all the old Yellow Pages books on a nation-wide campaign and what we ultimately do with them. We are proud that our company has been recognised twice over for its efforts in this regard."

The awards were presented on 10 December.
