Fort Cambridge is the first residential project of its size to have thermal insulation installed on the frontage of each block. This unique green measure will help to reduce heat loss in the winter months and cooling in the summer months, thereby drastically reducing energy costs. Furthermore the insulation will also act as a soundproofing component for residents of the block. The thermal insulation product, which is currently being installed on all the 47,000 sqr metres of frontage of the Fort Cambridge project, is from the high end Italian Fassa Bartolo range of products.
The thermal insulation consists of a special polystyrene protection layer of 5 cm thickness which is affixed to the front walls of each block and then covered by a graffiato coating, which is being used on the frontage of the blocks. This kind of insulation is extremely popular overseas and is commonly known as ‘sistema cappotto’. This insulation is also a measure which is installed on buildings which bear a green certification.
Commenting about the installation of the thermal insulation, Fort Cambridge chairman George Muscat said that “this investment in eco-friendly materials forms part of our commitment towards ensuring that all the properties are energy saving buildings. In planning out Fort Cambridge we have given energy conservation and green policies considerable importance because we believe that this will give all tenants added value. Other energy saving initiatives include a water-cooled air-conditioning system, thermal, glazed-glass apertures thereby ensuring good solar protection, as well as the construction of a reservoir underneath the properties which will accumulate water from roofs and terraces to irrigate the surrounding gardens.”
Mr Muscat said that, “in designing the apartments we wanted to ensure that they are equipped with unique luxuries and energy saving measures which are different to apartments in similar residential projects. In fact, in adjudicating all tenders for works at Fort Cambridge we have only chosen quality products even at the risk of higher prices. Our philosophy has always been not to compromise on quality.”
Work on the freehold Fort Cambridge project is now entering its final stages. The project is on target for completion by the middle of 2011. Currently the south block has reached the seventh storey, while the other blocks have all reached the fifth. Residents will be in a position to move into the south block by summer 2010.
