Achille Mizzi’s Poetry

Malta Independent Sunday, 14 February 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A selection of Maltese poetry by leading poet Achille Mizzi has been recently published by Grafikalogika. The collection, entitled The Essential Achille Mizzi, consists of 47 of Mizzi’s poems in the Maltese version, with the English translation on the facing page. These poems were chosen and translated by Prof. Peter Serracino Inglott.

This publication amply demonstrates to Maltese and foreigners alike the high standards that the Maltese language has reached as a literary medium in the latter half of the 20th century, especially where poetry is concerned.

In fact Achille Mizzi was one of the pioneers of modern poetry within the Moviment Qawmien Letterarju (Movement for the Promotion of Literature) and he gained immediate recognition in the 1960s with the publication of his first volume: L-Ghar tal Enimmi (1967). Mizzi’s literary career spans a period of more than 40 years, during which he produced further notable works such as Mas-Sejha tat-Tnabar (1971) of which he is co-author, Il-Kantiku tad-Demm (1980), Taqtir is-Skiet (1987), Poeziji – Achille Mizzi (1993), Vetrati Milwiena (1998) and Eklissi Perpetwi (2007).

The book is on sale at leading booksellers.
