Malta Independent Wednesday, 31 March 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Malta Industrial Parks Limited has yesterday notified the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority about the discovery of a possible archaeological site at Safi Aviation Park. This archaeological complex has been found in the course of excavations in preparation for the erection of the new Medavia Hanger in Safi.

Following coordination with the relevant stakeholders, MIP contractors have now started to clear and excavate the area. The site will then be surveyed to determine the exact nature and extent of the archaeological site, thereby enabling the Superintendence and MEPA to direct MIP as to the best conservation process to be followed. All works are being done under constant monitor of MEPA and the Superintendence personnel.

Malta Industrial Parks Limited thanked MEDAVIA, MEPA and the Cultural Superintendence for their prompt and swift assistance in the matter and will update the general public on the decisions taken. All efforts are being expended to ensure that this discovery will not impact on the critical timelines involved in the completion of the Safi Aviation Park, while respecting the need to preserve the country’s heritage for generations to come.
