Malta Independent Friday, 23 April 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Bank of Valletta is supporting the English Speaking Union (ESU) of Malta. The ESU is an international educational charity dedicated to promoting international understanding and human achievement through English.

The English Speaking Union was launched at the end of the First World War with the aim of promoting closer ties between the English speaking peoples. Since then it has grown into a world wide organisation operating in more than 57 countries creating international understanding through the use of the English language.

Martin Scicluna, President of ESU Malta and Richard Whale, Director of Education and Administration greeted Edward Muscat Azzopardi, Head Marketing at Bank of Valletta during the first session of the ‘English in Action’ programme held at ESU Malta’s Offices in Sliema

“The English in Action programme aims to provide non-native speakers of English with the opportunity to practise conversational English in a relaxed and social atmosphere”, said Mr Whale. “Participants get the opportunity to meet fluent English speakers and practise English conversation in an informal environment and improve the ease with which they express themselves and their ideas in English”.

“The Bank supports numerous educational initiatives aimed at promoting excellence in various fields of study and research,” said Mr Muscat Azzopardi. “Bank of Valletta is proud to be associated with this initiative that promotes spoken English. It is encouraging to note that there is already a strong demand for this programme and we augur that ESU’s initiative in Malta achieves the success that it enjoys in all the other countries where it has been established.”
