Malta Independent Monday, 28 June 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Edwin Galea was born in Valletta in 1934. He is a full-time professional marine artist who works exclusively in watercolours. Edwin is the son of the late artist Chev. Joseph Galea and received his artistic formation directly from his father. Edwin Galea is well known for his views of Malta and its coasts and harbours, and ships’ portraits, as well as historic naval episodes and sea battles. He has participated in several collective and one-man exhibitions in Malta, England, Italy, Greece and the USA. Edwin Galea is the only Maltese artist listed as an official US Navy Combat Artist and a US Coast Guard Artist. He was awarded the Meritorious Public Service Citation in 1984 for his paintings depicting the US navy during World War II. In 1989, on the occasion of the Malta Summit, the Office of the Prime Minister commissioned him four paintings of the USS Belknap and the Soviet cruiser Slava at anchor in Marsaxlokk Bay. These paintings were then presented by the Prime Minister of Malta to Presidents George Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev, Secretary of State James Baker and Foreign Minister Edward Shevardnadze. Edwin Galea’s works can be admired in numerous maritime museums worldwide.

The exhibition will be exhibited at The Mdina Gallery, St Sophia Street, Mdina until the end of July.
