‘Ospizio’ – A powder keg all over again

Malta Independent Monday, 5 July 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Malta Arts Festival is proud to present Ospizio by Theatre Anon which will be held today, on 8, 9, 12, 13 and 14 July at Ospizio, Floriana at 9pm. It is a site-specific theatre project by Theatre Anon commissioned by the Malta Arts Festival

Theatre Anon is made up of performers and theatre makers who all contribute directly to the creative process including composition, costume, set and light design, stage direction and physical work with the aim of ensuring that audiences enjoy a highly theatrical and entertaining experience.

The magnificent Ospizio in Floriana was originally a powder mill built by the Knights, and over the years – and centuries – it was used as an institution for the more vulnerable members of society – the old, the sick, the infirm, orphaned and unwanted children, prostitutes and the destitute. Its derelict walls and ruinous remains bear the scars of a turbulent history. They have a fascinating story to tell – a tale from which the story will be derived. This is not an ordinary production. Apart from featuring a cast of actors, dancers, singers and musicians, the piece is being developed specifically for this particular site. The characteristics of the site itself are as much a part of the act as the performers and the story itself.

The audience participates fully in the journey, moving through the site and discovering its secrets as the story unfolds around them. With a story that begins with a carnival atmosphere before taking a turn for the eerie, Ospizio promises to provide a unique experience to theatre-goers.

In an effort to reach the widest possible audience, entrance for the performance is at €15 with concessions for students and senior citizens at €10.
