No Need for concern over Golden Bay’s ‘green water’

Malta Independent Sunday, 25 July 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A spokesperson from the Majjistral Nature and History Park was quick this week to dispel rumours doing the rounds that the sea water at Golden Bay is contaminated, explaining that, “The bay’s sea water is regularly tested once a week by the Health Department and the outcome of the tests is always the same: that the sea is as clean and safe as can be, meaning that bathers have nothing to worry about”.

The sea at Golden Bay appears crystal blue from afar, but on closer inspection colour verges on the dark green.

The colour has concerned locals and tourists alike, with the latter appearing apprehensive about taking a dip in the water, fearful that the water is contaminated.

As a result, a lot of tourists can be seen to preferring a spot of sunbathing over having a swim in the slimy-looking water.

The spokesperson also explains that while weekly tests will continue to be held to monitor the purity of the areas seas, studies are also underway to ascertain why the sea has turned green.

“Initial studies are indicating that a lot of posidonia plants are slowly dying and are being dispersed across the area, which perhaps explains why much of the water has turned green.

“While these studies have yet to be confirmed, bathers have nothing to be worried about, because the death of posidonia plants is harmless and does not contaminate the water one bit.

“Moreover, cleaning at Golden Bay takes place on a regular basis to ensure that bathers can make the most of one of Malta’s most beautiful landscapes.”
