The Eden Leisure Group’s newly introduced 3D product at the Eden Cinemas has experienced an overwhelming success so far with the launch earlier this month of Shrek in 3D. The new 3D technology using disposable glasses has proven to be a hit with over 10,000 people coming to see the film in the first two weeks. While an increased attendance was predicted, the management has been overwhelmed by the demand and has had to place urgent airfreight orders for special 3D polarised glasses direct from South Korea.
General manager, Simon De Cesare stated: “It is great to hear people’s comments on the 3D experience we deliver. While some people were sceptical and others had negative experiences due to uncomfortable, heavy and darkened glasses, the public have given the thumbs up to the Eden 3D experience. In total we are planning to bring in approximately 70,000 pairs of glasses for 3D users. This is required for our first six-month period. Clearly the public and our customers have been waiting for us to bring the quality of the best sound and the biggest screens in 3D. We are offering to customers to dispose of the glasses in special bins which will be sent away for recycling.
The only disappointment is that we only have 1,300-seater converted available to show Shrek. Many shows were sold out for Shrek and even though it is still doing very well it will have to make way for the next Block Buster, Toy Story 3, which will be coming out next week. Given the number of 3D films coming out from now to December including Harry Potter, Narnia, Tron, Step Up 2 among many others, we clearly need many more screens showing 3D films. This is why we have recently signed agreements to convert our two largest cinemas 16 and 6 to digital 3D screens. These two screens will be equipped by October and will continue to offer the premium 3D experience.”
The Eden Cinemas 3D system uses the Master Image technology which offers the brightest picture and eye-popping effects on the largest screens in Malta.
