Air Raid over KlabbSajf

Malta Independent Thursday, 2 September 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

A group of KlabbSajf students re-lived Malta’s experience during World War II, from the sounding of the air raid warning to the all clear, thanks to Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and Bank of Valletta.

The KlabbSajf children were taken back in time, when it was compulsory to carry a gas mask and hearing the air raid warning meant rushing to the air raid shelter until the all clear was given.

KlabbSajf is a summer school for children from the areas of Cottonera and Kalkara run by Agenzija Appogg with the collaboration of the Foundation for Educational Services, Santa Margerita College, Kumpless Access Birgu and volunteers. This outing was organised with the aim of creating more awareness about Malta’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and their strategic partners, Bank of Valletta, organised a visit to the Malta at War museum in Vittoriosa, where the children watched the Malta GC Propaganda movie, which describes the hardships Maltese citizens and allies faced in 1942-43 after which they got the opportunity to descend into the shelters. A hands-on activity was then held, a ‘learning by doing’ activity covering various items used by children of that time, such as the gas masks, head protection and provisions. This activity was then followed by refreshments for the children and a group photo.

Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna is a voluntary non-governmental organisation active in the field of heritage preservation.
