Bereket Ghebremedhin, a 26-year-old Eritrean, was remanded in custody after being charged in court for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Ħamrun on Friday.
In court, presided over by Magistrate Gabriella Vella, the prosecution explained that the incident occurred on Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp at around 8 p.m., during the Corpus Christi procession.
The prosecution stated that the accused struck a police officer on the neck.
The accused was also charged with shouting and spitting at an employee while at the Police Headquarters in Floriana.
Ghebremedhin pleaded not guilty.
The magistrate noted that the accused was unable to provide a specific address of residence and therefore ordered that he remain under arrest.
The prosecution was led by Inspector Sarah Kathleen Zerafa, while Legal Aid lawyer Silvan Pulis appeared for the accused.
