Malta is receiving considerable international exposure as a result of a number of films shot in our islands with the financial assistance of the Malta Tourism Authority. The MTA through its Film Unit established in 2006, assists productions in which Malta is featured as Malta and is integrated into the storyline. The film Medium features numerous exterior locations and shots of Malta, while, Kammerspiel and L’Omicidio Su Misura are mostly filmed in prestigious houses in Malta, but will also feature a number of exterior filming locations.
Over the past weeks the television production L’Omicidio Su Misura was shot in Malta. This followed the filming of two other productions Kammerspiel and Medium which were shot in Malta last Spring. These films will be aired both on Canale 5 during prime time as the ‘Movie of the Week’ and in the United States in early 2011, the films will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Studios. These thrillers with a running time of a hundred minutes each will be filmed in English and later due to the Italian airing, dubbed into Italian.
The decision to shoot these three films in Malta was taken after Leader Film Company completed the filming of the episode of Rex ‘La Maledizione del Caravaggio’ in Malta. The episode shot in Malta is to be shown on RAI 1 in Autumn 2010. In Italy it has an audience of around seven million, and is viewed in over one hundred additional countries worldwide, 20 of which are European countries.
The MTA’s Film Unit participates in various film festivals such as the Rome Film Fiction Festival and the World Content Market – Prague, with the aim of raising Malta’s profile worldwide as an ideal filming location for Malta-based story lines.
The Malta Tourism Authority recognises filming and film tourism as an important niche market and believes that such initiatives offer broad scope for promotion in a popular and diverse manner. It also showcases the Maltese Islands as an optimum venue for film production, given the excellent natural light almost all year round, weather and stunning locations. Producers are also attracted by the highly competitive incentives package extended by the Malta Film Commission to companies filming in the Maltese Islands.
