There were mixed results for Bradley Hindle (squash) and some of the Lawn Bowls athletes who were the first Maltese in action yesterday at the Delhi Games.
Bradley Hindle started on a positive note when he beat Navin Samarasinghe of Srti Lanka 3-0 - 11-1, 11-5, 11-3 in a first round match, but then lost his round of 32 encounter against Ryan Cuskelly of Australia 3-1, even if it was not so easy for the Australian as the score might suggest.
In fact, Cuskelly won the opening two games 11-8, 11-8. Then Hindle fought back to win the third 11-6 only for the Australian to make sure of the victory with an 11-6 win in the fourth and last game.
In Lawn Bowls, the Maltese triples men’s team won their first Group A match against Scotland 1.5-0.5.
Malta’s Leonard Callus, Michael John Debono and Joseph Emanuel Saragozza defeated Scotland’s Wayne Hogg, David Peacock and William Wood 6-5 in the first game and then drew the second 6-6, for a total score of 12-11 for the Maltese.
Later, the Maltese were unlucky to go down against Canada following a tie break. The three Maltese players won the first match 10-9 and Canada’s Hirendra Bhartu, Steve McKerhen and Fred Wallbank levelled the score at 1-1 after winning the second game 10-6. They went on to win the tie break 6-0.
The pairs team of Brendan Aquilina and Francis Michael Vella had a strong start in Group B, winning their opening clash against the Falkland Islands 2-0.
The Maltese were vastly superior to the Falklands’ George Paice and Gerald Reive and ran out easy 2-0 winners (10-4 and 24-1 for a total of 34-5).
