Bank of Valletta has supported a survey commissioned by the Transplant Support Group to assess the likelihood of people having their ‘organ donation’ consent on their national ID cards.

The survey, carried out by M. Fsadni and Associates, interviewed over 500 individuals from Malta and Gozo who were chosen at random. It assessed both knowledge of organ donation and the desire to indicate the willingness to donate their organs upon their death on the ID card.

The findings of this survey were revealed during a national conference on Organ Donation and Transplants organised by the Transplant Support Group.

“A very high percentage of interviewees, 94 per cent, in fact knew what organ donation is about,” said Marika Fsadni, from M. Fsadni and Associates. “This is coupled with 92 per cent of all respondents who were willing to express their desire to donate their organs on their ID cards.”

Addressing the conference, Transplant Support Group president Alfred Debattista expressed his satisfaction at the results obtained through the survey. “We are confident that the willingness of prospective donors to donate their organs upon their death, if expressed on their ID card, will be honoured by their family members following their death.”

“Bank of Valletta has been a supporter of the Transplant Support Group ever since its inception over 10 years ago,” said BoV manager marketing Charles Azzopardi. “We believe that through this survey, everyone will get the opportunity to register as an organ donor and help save lives.”

The Transplant Support Group will now be following up the results of this research with the relative authorities to begin the process to have the findings of this survey implemented.
