High Expectations for FinanceMalta’s fourth annual conference

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 April 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

FinanceMalta’s fourth annual conference is being held at the Westin Dragonara Resort in St Julian’s on 20 May.

The conference is a unique opportunity for over 200 foreign and local financial services practitioners, as well as industry, government, regulators and, importantly, FinanceMalta’s 212 corporate and affiliate company members, to discuss developments in international financial regulation, new business opportunities for Malta’s practitioners and the industry’s increasing potential for growth as part of Malta’s new-found status as a financial services jurisdiction.

This year’s annual conference highlights the increasing demand for greater visibility by these service providers within the industry to a captive audience of predominantly financial service practitioners. Camilleri Preziosi and the Infomate Group are both headline sponsors of the conference, in which much interest has been shown, not only in the conference itself but also in sponsoring it. Due to demand shown by FinanceMalta members, exhibition stands have been introduced to the conference for the first time and nine exhibitors will be exhibiting this year.

Camilleri Preziosi partner Laragh Cassar said: “The decision to sponsor FinanceMalta’s 4th annual conference in 2011 was unanimous among the partners. We believe that FinanceMalta has been doing sterling work to promote Malta as a financial services reality and we feel that we should show our support through sponsorship. We are pleased to have Camilleri Preziosi associated with FinanceMalta for this event.”

The conference, entitled Malta’s financial services industry – gearing up to sustain growth also acts as part of the organisation’s remit to build greater visibility and credibility for Malta as a European financial centre, not only in its targeted international markets but also locally in meeting that overseas demand through the financial services industry.

Infomate Group managing director Joseph Sultana said: “The Infomate Group is proud to sponsor FinanceMalta’s 4th Annual Conference this year. The financial industry is an industry that demands the highest levels of IT services and support, and these are synonymous with the Infomate Group’s overall offering. Through the broad range of services we offer and our experience in this vertical, both locally and overseas, we are perfectly aligned with FinanceMalta’s initiative to complete the loop, making Malta a winning destination.”

Speakers at this year’s conference include Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Finance, the Economy and Investment Minister Tonio Fenech, FinanceMalta chairman Kenneth Farrugia, Malta Financial Services Authority chairman Joe V. Bannister, Senior Global Economist and Head of Insurance Unit, European Commission Karel Van Hulle, Chief Economist, HSBC UK Karen Ward, ex-chairman of the Committee of European Securities regulators (CESR) and the European Regional Committee of IOSCO Eddy Wymeersch, and Professor of Banking and Finance at the Università del Salento in Lecce in Italy Vito Spada.

Key topics to be addressed this year include: A Changing Regulatory Landscape; The Way Forward in Regulation; Financial Crises: a new perspective on how the global economy is emerging from the crises; The World in 2050: Understanding the rise and implications of the growth in the emerging markets; Post the financial crises: regulatory initiatives having an impact on the European funds industry; Solvency II: from Regulation to Supervision and VAT on financial services and insurance: current issues.
