Malta Independent Friday, 1 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

An immigrant who stood charged with maliciously causing a police officer grievous bodily harm on Wednesday evening filed a plea of insanity yesterday.

He stood charged with attempting to seriously injure the police officer, violently resisting him and causing him slight injuries in the process, harming another police officer and disturbing the peace.

Lawyer Frank Cassar, who appeared for the accused, pointed out that his client was residing at Mount Carmel Hospital, and had various psychiatric problems. In fact, he said, he had attempted suicide on four different occasions and still bears the scars.

Duty Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna appointed three psychiatrists, Joseph Spiteri, Peter Muscat and David Cassar to prepare a report about the accused and decided that he should be remanded in custody at Mount Carmel Hospital. Police inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.
