The first two next-generation ATMs were installed at the newly-refurbished HSBC branch in Mosta. Among other functionalities, the ATMs offer customers ‘real-time’ value when paying-in cash at any time of the day.
With the new ATMs, cash deposits are accepted loose and without the need for a deposit envelope. After inserting the cash, the machine counts the notes and provides a receipt showing the number and value of the notes deposited. The funds are then credited automatically into the account.
ATMs with the same functions will be phased in other branches around Malta and Gozo throughout the year.
“There is an increased demand for automated services among our customers. In 2010, teller activity dropped by 14% and deposit machines usage increased by 10%. Our customers are telling us that they need better machines and that’s why we are giving them new ATMs throughout the network in Malta and Gozo. Our customers are increasingly using branches for more complex and personalised banking services and that’s why we are putting in more interview spaces,” said Philip Farrugia, HSBC’s Chief Technology and Services Officer during the re-opening of the Bank’s branch in Mosta.
The refurbishment of the Mosta branch is part of an €8 million upgrade programme HSBC is investing in its branch network giving customers the same brand experience and excellent service in any HSBC branch in the world. HSBC’s refurbished branches are located in Buġibba, Ħamrun, Swieqi, Paola, Żejtun, Archbishop Street Valletta and Mosta.
Apart from the €8 million investment in branches, this week HSBC announced the completion of a €10 million project to update its main systems infrastructure. The upgrade brings world class technology and improved functionality and performance for the benefit of both customers and staff. The project, known as ‘One HSBC’ started over 18 months ago and was completed last week thanks to the input of over 280 members of staff in Malta and from around the HSBC Group.
Mr Farrugia said: “One HSBC will help transform the way our customers do business with HSBC. The Group’s strategy is to introduce simpler and more flexible systems and processes that make it easier for our people to serve customers and for customers to serve themselves.”
Speaking about the refurbishment in the Mosta branch, Mr Farrugia said tellers are located on the first floor for extra security and reassurance. In addition, the new Mosta branch also offers better privacy and increased space for customers to discuss their financial planning needs. HSBC surveys show that people are increasingly inclined towards self-service for faster, run-of-the-mill banking around the clock, while they require privacy and personalised attention for financial planning for themselves and their families.
Speaking during the re-opening event were Mr Philip Farrugia as well as Ms Speranza Catania, HSBC’s Northern Area Director, and Mosta mayor Dr Paul Chetcuti Caruana.
