World-renowned Opera stars for ‘Tosca’

Malta Independent Sunday, 14 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

They are being dubbed as arguably the greatest-ever combination of opera singers to grace an opera stage in Malta. Tenor Neil Shicoff, soprano Michele Crider and baritone Juan Pons are set to appear in the three leading roles of Tosca at the Aurora Theatre in Gozo, this October.

The three artistes feature regularly on the most prestigious opera stages around the world. While needing no introduction, their names are recurringly found at the Metropolitan Opera (New York), Royal Opera House Covent Garden (London), State Opera Houses (Vienna), and the Teatro alla Scala (Milan) among other famous venues. Worth a mention is Shicoff’s and Crider’s participation in Tosca in Vienna last opera season. Michele Crider is one of today’s pre-eminent dramatic sopranos of her generation. She has been making her mark on both the operatic and concert stages of the world in a remarkably wide repertoire. Juan Pons and Neil Shicoff have been dominating the New York’s Met Opera stage for a good number of years with no sign of diminishing splendour as they are still securing leading roles in the most important opera houses of the world to date.

Tosca, an opera in three acts, will be presented at the Aurora Theatre on Saturday, 15 October under the distinguished patronage of H. E. Dr George Abela, President of Malta. The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by resident conductor Colin Attard will also be participating. Novella Tabili has been, once more, entrusted with the set designs and artistic direction.

Tickets are priced at €70, €60 and €45.
