Young Musicians in Inter-Cultural Symphony Orchestra

Malta Independent Sunday, 21 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Eight Maltese young musicians have just returned from the BISYOC Inter-cultural Youth Orchestral Camp in Shropshire, UK. BISYOC consists of an orchestra which is formed for ten days during which time the musicians rehearse together, have ensemble and composition workshops, learn about each other’s different backgrounds and finally put up three concerts: one chamber concert and two symphonic concerts. The symphonic concert programme for this year was very demanding: Introduction to Also Sprach Zarathustra (Strauss), Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture (Tchaikovsky), The Planets Suite (Holst) and Across the Stars from Star Wars (Williams). The orchestra was directed by Julian Gibbons and the audience was full of praise for the orchestra. This year, the Maltese participants were given more responsibility. Alex Abela and Laura Cioffi played as principals in their respective sections, while Keith Sacco successfully played the cor anglais for the first time. Apart from the musical side of BISYOC, this summer camp also provides an opportunity to socialise with all the different participants, who came from 13 countries, through the cultural events in which the Maltese group participated eagerly. This venture was made possible partially through the help of the Malta Arts Fund which helped one of the participants and through the support given by the BISYOC organisation team and the respective tutors.
