Financial News Compiled by BOV Group: Equities higher while government bonds retrace

The Malta Stock Exchange continued to rebound from its recent lows on Wednesday, gaining seven points, or 0.2 per cent, to close at the 3,121.172 level on light volume of 11,696 shares across eleven deals.

Financial shares continued to propel the market higher with Middlesea Insurance plc leading the way. The Floriana-based insurance company added 1c1, or 1.2 per cent, to end the day at €0.911 in a single deal of 144 shares.

HSBC Bank Malta plc was also higher, 0c1, or less than 0.1 per cent, to close at €2.730 on volume of 2,530 shares across three deals.

Bank of Valletta plc stock, meanwhile, gained 2c, or 0.8 per cent, to close at €2.580 in five deals for a total of 6,238 shares.

Simonds Farsons Cisk failed to participate in the rally and lost a marginal 0c5, or 0.3 per cent, to finish at €1.795 in a single deal of 284 shares.

Rounding out trading were the shares of Malta International Airport plc, which close unchanged at €1.540, also in a single deal of 2,500 shares.

Trading in the corporate bond market ended higher on Wednesday with all five of the bonds to trade in the day closing in positive territory. The 4.8% Bank of Valletta Plc Sub € 2020 bond was the day’s big mover, adding €1.250, or 1.3 per cent, to close at €101.250 in two trades for a total of 50,400 shares.

In contrast, investors shed government bonds yesterday and traded nine of the ten issues to see action lower. The bond to suffer the day’s worst performance was the 5% MGS 2021(I) issue, which fell €0.660, or 0.6 per cent, to end at €107.090 in three trades for a total of €9,283 nominal. Managing to advance was the 7.8% MGS 2018 bond, which added €0.10, or 0.1 per cent, to end at €125.390 in a single trade of €580 nominal.
