Malta Independent Sunday, 18 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Inspire’s inclusive summer school proved to be a great success and the children had a blast thanks to the financial help of a number of sponsors, notably The Alfred Mizzi Foundation that donated €2,000.

The Inspire Summer School, which ran from 11 July to 2 September, had a delightful assortment of fun activities for children. Children attending the two-month summer school got to try their hands at making nifty creations in arts and crafts lessons and sculpting pretty works of art during pottery class.

They also had the chance to go on a thrilling horseback ride and to master some swimming skills during games in the pool.

In addition to this, the children practised their sporting skills during outings to the Eden Super Bowl and learn a bit about farming and nature at Għammieri Agricultural Research and Development Centre.

The Inspire Summer School was attended by 210 children aged between seven and 12, 56 of whom had a disability. Lessons were in the hands of 14 teachers and 46 Learning Support Assistants who gave individual attention to those children who needed support.

Apart from being fun and educational, the activities were tailored to the children’s specific needs, allowing them to learn, interrelate and develop social and communication skills in a recreational environment during their break away from school.

Many parents praised the summer school for having a caring team and for being well organised. They also said their children came back happy and invigorated following exciting activities.

The parents have also commended Inspire’s holistic approach, which combines both socio-educational and therapeutic services to the children.

Apart from being fun, the activities are also very beneficial for the kids’ treatment as they help them work on skills in an entertaining environment.

Children with disabilities received a free summer school, as the costs of the LSAs were covered.

Inspire takes great pride in offering a quality service that has at its heart the health and safety of the children.

Inspire, The Foundation for Inclusion, supports over 1,000 children and adults across the Maltese Islands. Its programmes are focused on targeting the educational, therapeutic, social and recreational needs of those they help while focusing on strengthening their ability and encouraging their potential.

Inspire wishes to thank The Alfred Mizzi Foundation and all the corporate entities that generously sponsored its summer school by funding the employment of the Learning Support Assistants. Their contribution guaranteed the children a memorable summer and helped them continue to grow and develop among their peers.

Set up in 2004, the aim of The Alfred Mizzi Foundation’s is to promote, diffuse and safeguard Maltese culture and heritage, education, the environment and social solidarity.
