Malta Independent Tuesday, 27 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Former PN MP and deputy speaker Philip Saliba passed away yesterday at the age of 89.

A notary by profession, Mr Saliba first contested an election in 1951 and was elected to parliament.

He was from Zebbug and a great collaborator of former Prime Minister Gorg Borg Olivier, who contested the same district.

Mr Saliba continued to contest on the PN ticket until the 1981 election. He served as deputy speaker of the House between 1962 and 1971.

During his parliamentary career, he participated in various Council of Europe as well as Commonwealth Parliamentary Association meetings.

The late MP was well involved in the campaign leading to the Independence referendum. On his initiative, the PN had opened a club in his hometown – Zebbug.

In 1999, he was bestowed with the National Order of Merit.

He had been married to Marie Louise and had five children.

In a statement, the PN pointed out that Philip Saliba always carried out his duties with commitment, dedication and a love for the country. The party said it remains grateful to politicians like notary Saliba because present generations are enjoying the results of work for a democratic and independent country he and others had strived for.
