Malta Independent Saturday, 3 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The car scrappage scheme under which a maximum of €2,000 is offered to those buying a new car and scrapping an old one is open again, with Finance Minister Tonio Fenech saying the government is investing in better air quality.

The scheme has been successful since it was launched, he said, and now it will be open up to one year, or up to a maximum of 3,000 cars. Those who do not have a car to scrap but buy a new one according to the scheme’s conditions, may benefit up to a maximum of €1,000.

The news conference was addressed also by Tourism Parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco.

The scheme is open to Malta residents buying an M1 category, Euro V car which was not registered in any country and who have a car which is at least 10 years old. Those who do not own a car may also apply, in which case some conditions also apply.
