Labour MEP Prof. Edward Scicluna has been re-elected Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee at the mid-term point of the legislative term. British Liberal MEP Sharon Bowles remains Chair of the committee.
Prof. Scicluna, who has represented the Socialist group as a Rapporteur or group spokesman on a range of dossiers related to the euro since being elected an MEP in 2009, has also emerged as the Committee’s expert on statistics. He is currently working on two dossiers on improving statistical governance.
The Economic committee has been responsible for legislation on financial regulation and economic governance, including the ‘six pack’ to improve the governance of the eurozone, on which Prof Scicluna was a Socialist group spokesman.
Prof. Scicluna commented on his reappointment, “I am very pleased to have been re-elected to this important position with the support of the Socialist and Democrat group. The Economic committee has been in the eye of the storm that has engulfed the eurozone in the last year, and will continue to be the most influential legislative committee in the European Parliament.
“This is an important post for our country to hold as one of the most recent countries to adopt the euro, and I will ensure that our interests are safeguarded.”
