Melita Welcomes the MCA initiative on broadband quality of service

Malta Independent Saturday, 10 March 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Melita welcomes the framework on internet broadband Quality of Service recently published for consultation by the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) and it pledges its full support and cooperation during the implementation of this initiative.

Melita is already very active in ensuring that it delivers a consistent high quality broadband internet service. The company runs internal tests and its internet service is subject to independent external testing which improves its internet service quality.

The results of the latest external independent testing are very encouraging. The Promise Index Test performed by independent provider OOKLA shows that as at the end of February, Melita delivered the promised speed in over 96% of the tests completed. This score is far better than the EU average result of 85%.

Melita believes that internet users should have all tools at their disposal to compare the service they receive from their internet service provider in relation to established industry norms. This MCA initiative will increase transparency on broadband services and will empower customers to make informed decisions when choosing amongst internet service providers. The current comparative elements of retail price and headline speed may not always provide an accurate picture of the service actually delivered to the customer.

“Consumers worldwide sometimes feel there are variances in the quality of service they receive. While this may be dependent on geography or network issues, increasingly it may also arise from issues in the devices used. As more and more people use the internet from different devices like phones, tablets or game consoles, they are faced with a reality that not all these devices are capable of high broadband speeds”, said Simon Montanaro, Chief Technology Officer at Melita.
