I am a commuter who frequently uses route bus No. 53. With the Arriva service, we have a pleasant voice informing us of the next bus stop, but there are always two mistakes.
Firstly, on entering Għar Barka, on the outskirts of Rabat, we are told that the next stop is “Ħal Balzan” and it should be “Balzano” after the Maltese composer Don Giuseppe Balzano (1616-1700) who died in Mdina. There is a road in the area that has the name “Balzano”.
The second big mistake on this route is heard on the way to Santa Venera, where the voice announces “Ċalossa”. This should be ‘Calosso’, after the nearby Umberto Calosso School, which is named after the Italian journalist, politician, professor of Italian literature and noted anti-Fascist.
These mistakes are repeated every time one gets on Bus No.53. But what particularly annoyed me was when I heard young schoolchildren saying that they would be getting off the bus at “Ċalossa”.
