World renowned actors are expected to be gracing our nation in the coming months as the thriving film industry is set to continue expanding. Though no official confirmation has been made, Tom Cruise could be on his way to Malta where parts of the film ‘All you need is kill’ expected to be released next year, could be shot in Malta. A quick search on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) which is an online database related to films and television programs, with over 100 million users each month, yields some interesting results regarding those films featuring scenes shot in Malta. These include ‘Mary Mother of Christ’ and a host of television productions.

In an interview with The Malta Independent, head of the Malta Film Commission Peter Busuttil confirms that world renowned actors are on the way, though he did not reveal any names. According to Mr Busuttil, the film industry is doing quite well as Malta is attracting a lot of interest from abroad, with the number of enquiries at the moment standing at around 60.

He also comments on the local films industry, stating that it would mean very little if a short film is screened only in local cinemas. The next step has to be participation in foreign festivals, where productions would get much bigger exposure and be noticed by renowned directors or production companies. In this regard, the commission it taking several initiative to provide better training and opportunities to the local enthusiasts or those willing to start a career in this industry.
