Three men, one of whom is already serving time, yesterday pleaded guilty before Magistrate Antonio Mizzi to several thefts in which they got away with hauls worth in all some half a million euros.
Glen Debattista, 52, of Sta Venera, his son Ryan, 21, and prisoner Carmel Hartley, 40, admitted committing the thefts between August and October last year. Their hauls included antique jewellery, diamonds and cash.
They stole from Pjazza Antiques in South Street, Valletta, between 6-8 August, from Capri Café in St Zachary Street, Valletta, between 7-8 September and on 24 October from an ATM in Republic Street, Valletta.
Mr Debattista and his son were allowed bail on a personal guarantee of €10,000 each, until sentence is handed down. Dr Stefano Filletti, appearing for Mr Hartley, asked the court to be lenient with him because he had cooperated with the police and is serving a jail sentence that is both unjust and excessive.
Mr Hartley, Dr Filletti said, is bringing up five children, one of whom is not his, and one of them is severely disabled.
Dr Yanika Bugeja and Dr Noel Bianco appeared for the father and son. The prosecution was conducted by Inspector James Grech and Inspector Joseph Mercieca.
