Transport Malta yesterday said that the St Elmo Bridge is open to the public and caution is advocated by people who want to visit the site of this facility to ensure a truly enjoyable experience. No access is permitted onto the breakwater.

The following instructions are therefore to be adhered to at all times:

• Access to the bridge is from te Marsamxett side of Valletta through the Jews Sally Port. The rock pathway beneath Fort St Elmo leading to the bridge is unlit and unsuitable for vehicles. It is not advisable to venture to the site during darkness unless with the use of adequate lighting.

• The area is very exposed to the natural elements associated with the open sea. Therefore, especially during storms, bad weather and swell conditions particularly from the East and North East directions, the public is cautioned not to approach the bridge especially if waves are breaking and overtopping the foreshore/bridge.  The site, including the approach and bridge itself, can be dangerous during such conditions.

• In the interests of safety and security no one is to climb onto or over railings and gates or onto the arch or sides of the bridge.

• Jumping into the sea from the bridge and its ancillary facilities is strictly prohibited.

• The sea under the bridge is a traffic route for small vessels crossing into and out of the Grand Harbour. Therefore no fishing is permitted.

• No vehicles are permitted to block access to the bridge. 

• No vehicles are permitted to access or park on the bridge abutments (stone platforms at the base of the bridge).

• The bridge may vibrate during certain conditions. In such cases, people who experience motion sickness should descend the bridge or stand on one of the two elevated belvederes at either end of the bridge. 

• Young children should be accompanied by adults at all times.

• No barbeques, fireworks or other incendiary devices are to be used on or around the bridge.

• Public is to heed site safety notices and indicated restrictions at all times.
