Malta Independent Sunday, 29 July 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The St Roque Chapel on St Michael’s Counterguard in Valletta, which was destroyed during the Second World War, is to be rebuilt. Minister of Resources and Rural Affairs George Pullicino made the announcement during a boat trip where he briefed the media about the ongoing restoration project of Valletta’s fortifications.

This chapel dates back to the times of the Knights of St John and was built round the year 1643 during the reign of Grand Master Lascaris. Due to its location on top of Valletta’s outer fortifications that faced the Lazaretto on Manoel Island across Marsamxett Harbour, people serving their quarantine period there used to follow Mass celebrated in this chapel from the Lazaretto.

Although extensively damaged, the altar and one of its walls are still standing. Minister Pullicino said that in order for the fortifications to be restored to their former glory, it was decided to rebuild this chapel according to the original plan. He said that the reconstruction would be based on old documents as well as photographs in possession of Heritage Malta.

Meanwhile, work on the fortification museum, which will be located in Biagio Steps is coming to a close. This will include an audiovisual theatre, a library as well as space for workshops.
