President George Abela said this morning that it was his prerogative to grant a presidential pardon or otherwise to a woman who had been imprisoned after he husband was not granted access to their son. In an interview on Radio Malta, Dr Abela said he could exercise his own prerogative and was not acting on the advice of the government. In this particular situation, he had given weight to what he had been told in his meeting with the couple’s son, while also taking into consideration what the Cabinet, the Attorney General and the Police had said on the matter. The Constitution gives the President the power to grant pardon to any person, either free or subject to lawful conditions.
