As part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives Air Malta has donated 50 trees to the Sant’ Antnin Family Park in Marsaskala. This park, which spans an area the size of 21 football pitches, is the largest family park in Malta and offers various recreational facilities including a children's play area, an agro tourism centre, a water course, an outdoor gym, picnic areas and a 5-a side football pitch. The park will be officially opened next Sunday, 24th February.
These trees were donated by Air Malta’s Cargo and Ground Handling staff sections as an alternative to sending Christmas cards last year. This initiative was supported by the airline as it contributes towards a healthier environment and partly offsets the effects of air travel.
Today climate change is one of the key topics facing the airline industry and Air Malta is taking this issue very seriously. Together with its partners, Airbus, the Association of European Airlines (AEA) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the Maltese airline is working to reduce emissions, wastes, and become more environmentally responsible.
Commenting on this initiative, Peter Davies, Chief Executive of the airline said, “The environment is everybody’s responsibility and our environmental activism has become an integral part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program. Aviation contributes for approximately 2 per cent of global CO2 emissions of which 80% stem from travel on long distance flights. Over the years, to mitigate and offset any negative effects, the airline has assisted the national Tree for You (34U) campaign, and planted hundreds of trees in various parks around the islands including the Salini Park, the Ta’ Qali National Park, the Sports Complex of Luqa St. Andrews and donated 350 olive trees to the Koperattiva Rurali Manikata.
“Air Malta is determined to continue fulfilling its social obligations whilst supporting organisations and initiatives that add value to the community. The ‘34U’ campaign fits perfectly with our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives whereby we are not only helping to decrease our carbon footprint but also through this campaign we can give back to society greener recreational areas and a healthier environment”, added Mr Davies.
Air Malta was one of the first Maltese organisations on the islands to drive forward the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility. Since its inception the airline has contributed hundreds of thousands of euros and assisted various organisations and individuals in diverse field including humanitarian, medical, philanthropic, cultural and heritage protection, sports and environmental initiatives.
