District 5: PL candidates braced for nip and tuck contest

Malta Independent Thursday, 28 February 2013, 09:07 Last update: about 12 years ago

Four of the 13 Labour candidates in this district are contesting for the very first time. Labour MEP Edward Scicluna, who is touted to be the next finance minister should Labour be elected to government, is the most high profile name among them. The other new names are those of Marsascala mayor Mario Calleja, Robert Bugeja and nutritionist Marion Mizzi. On the other hand Ansel Farrugia Migneco and Silvo Izzi Savona are not contesting.

In the 2008 general election veteran Labour MP Karmenu Vella was the frontrunner, followed by Marlene Farrugia (Pullicino) and George Vella who vacated his seat, thus paving the way for the election of Joe Sammut in the casual election. Retired surgeon Anthony Zammit also made a good showing, narrowly missing the cut with George Vella, with the latter inheriting more votes in later counts.

The PL’s list also includes former MP Joe Farrugia ‘Il-farell’ who has considerable support in Zurrieq, Silvio Schembri and Marsaxlokk mayor Edric Micallef.

In total six MPs are on the PL’s list, with Luciano Busuttil contesting on this district for the very first time.
