Greece's two largest unions are calling for "mass participation" in a 24-hour general strike and demonstration they have called for May 1 to mark labor day.

The GSEE and ADEDY unions issued a joint statement Monday saying the strike would focus on demands to end austerity. Mired in a deep financial crisis, Greece depends on international rescue loans to prevent bankruptcy.

The strike is expected to affect all public services, including public transport, which will be running on a restricted schedule. Ferries to and from Greek islands will remain tied up in port from midnight Tuesday to midnight Wednesday night.

Most of Europe celebrates its labor day holiday on May 1. However in Greece this year the holiday has been moved to the following Tuesday, immediately after Orthodox Easter.
