People with special needs must have help beyond the age of 16

Social Solidarity Minister Marie Louise Colerio Preca and Parliamentary Secretary Franco Mercieca yesterday explained the services on offer for disabled children at the Special School in Sannat.

This school offers services to 26 students, seven of them through a whole day programme, while 19 others attend ICT and Multi-sensory therapy over a two-week period.

During the visit, Minister  Coleiro Preca praised the work being carried out at the school which allows children of all abilities to maximize their opportunities and live an independent life.

She said the government wholeheartedly believes in the concept and will work to sustain it.

Dr Mercieca assured those present that the government was committed to strengthening such services and diversifying them.

He also referred to the worries that a substantial number of families with children who have special needs. He said that many worry about what will happen to their children once they leave school at 16 years of age.

He said that there is a void which has never really been addressed and therefore infrastructure and services were needed to prevent the loss of progress that special needs children make.
