The government has set up a commission on domestic violence composed of 11 individuals, including Yana Micallef Stafrace as chairperson. Dr Micallef Stafrace's father was a Labour minister in the 1970s.

The announcement was made by Social Solidarity Minister Marie Louise Coleiro Preca.

Rene Laiviera was appointed deputy chairperson, Doris Vassallo as secretary, and Oriella Fabri, Marouska Bonnici, Rita Borg Xuereb, Josef Masini Vento, Charles Cassar, Charlene Barbara, l-Inspector Louise Calleja and Roberta Lepre were appointed members.

The minister said that the Commission will be holding consultation meetings with stakeholders and vowed to address domestic violence by using preventive and educational measures.

Ms Laiviera already forms part of the local examinations board, as announced by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo last month.
