The Bicycle Advocacy Group (Malta) paid a courtesy call on President George Abela on 21 May as part of their bike to Work Month celebrations. The group and President Abela discussed numerous issues affecting cyclists and particularly commuting cyclists that ranged from the significant social benefits of cycling, its ability to positively impact upon traffic congestion, parking issues and pollution.
The group also discussed their concerns about making cycling safer with a view to making it easier for people to use this environmentally friendly form of transport. Representing the group were Mr Carmel Asciak the groups treasurer, Ms Nanette Farrugia, Dr George Debono and Mr Jim Wightman the groups PRO. Ms Farrugia and Mr Asciak were able to recount their stories of being innocent victims of road traffic accidents while riding, Ms Farrugia most famously being hit by a bendy bus last year whilst riding along the coast road. The meeting however was able to focus on the positives of cycling as a form of exercise and transport, with the L-Istrina charity bike ride, a firm favourite on the cycling calendar.
President George Abela asked the group to keep up its efforts to help the country catch up with other EU states cycling cultures and was able to offer practical sensible guidance to the group with a view to promoting bicycle awareness.
Dr Debono presented to President Abela a copy of his report about sustainable mobility in Sliema, while Mr Wightman presented him with a pack of safe cycling pocket guides.
