An infrastructure coordination committee, which Infrastructure Minister Joe Mizzi has described as having an important role and huge responsibilities, held its first meeting on Wednesday, with urgency.

The committee, chaired by Mr Mizzi, has been approved by the cabinet and will see to coordination between entities to ensure there is accountability in the infrastructural sector. Mr Mizzi said that various departments will be working together through this committee to plan the work that would need to be done before work on every infrastructural project starts. The planning would ensure that everything that needs to be done would be done, and that local councils involved would be consulted.

The committee’s first meeting was attended by representatives from Transport Malta, Arriva, the Water Services Corporation, Enemalta, GO and Melita Cable, the police, project architects and local council representatives, among others.

Its urgency was because of problems in the Dock One project in Cospicua. The DOI said works were supposed to be proceeding as planned, but in fact roadworks are again having to be done because it had not been done properly.

Mr Mizzi told the meeting this was not acceptable, that was why the meeting was called, to draw up a plan of what needs to be done, to ensure that the work starts as soon as possible, without inconvenience to residents, and to ensure that it is completed quickly.
