Company plans Game of Thrones Malta tours

Travel company Viator is reportedly working on organising tours to sites in Malta that featured in the first season of the smash hit Game of Thrones series. The company, which already offers tours to film site locations in Northern Ireland and Croatia, is considering expanding the tour to Malta, Morocco and Iceland – all of which have featured in the HBO series.

Malta only served as a location in the first series, being replaced by the Croatian city of Dubrovnik for filming in the fictional city of King’s Landing.

Malta had doubled for all the exteriors in King’s Landing and Essos. Several streets and squares in Mdina, the gate at Fort Ricasoli, public areas of the presidential palaces of San Anton and Verdala and Villa Bulebin in Zebbug all featured in several episodes as palaces and streets in King's Landing in the first season. Other locations used included Fort Manoel, Manikata, Valletta, the dungeons at Fort St Angelo and the Dominican convent in Rabat and, of course, Dwejra in Gozo – which caused a bitter controversy in Malta when an unscrupulous contractor damaged the protected beach.

The finale of season three of The Game of Thrones is being broadcast today in the United States.

“People love to go behind the scenes and see the real places,” said Viator vice-president of marketing Kelly Gillease, according to American news network NBC News. “And while Game of Thrones can be quite graphic and scary for people, fans want to see the castle, the cool bridge and the other things that invoke the spirit of the places in the show.”
