Malta’s first dental spa inaugurated

Malta Independent Friday, 14 June 2013, 14:50 Last update: about 11 years ago

Malta’s first dental spa was inaugurated in Ta’ Xbiex this week. This is the fourth generation of the Demajo family involved in the family tradition of dentistry.

The initiative is part financed by the EU while Malta Enterprise’s MicroInvest scheme was also utilised to decorate the spa.

At the event, Parliamentary Secretary Dr Zammit Lewis said that the spa will be based on the medical tourism concept, a concept where foreigners can opt to come over to Malta for dental treatment and to undergo cosmetic dental surgery.

He said that the dental spa will help attract a number of foreigners to Malta, whose aim is to utilise our country’s medical services.

The clinic uses a software referred to as Computer Aided Design – Computer Aided Manufacture (CAD-CAM) which enables dental professionals to create and modify artificial teeth.

The equipment’s aim is to eliminate metal and use just ceramic to build and produce teeth through just one appointment.

By eliminating metal, one eliminates the conventional sequence of steps used to produce a dental crown or bridge. Raw materials like wax, plaster, stone, silicones, and acrylic are all eliminated and replaced by using the software.

The ceramic dental restorations are milled out of highly aesthetic porcelain blocks using an integrated milling unit.

This innovative way of manufacturing ceramic dental restorations reduce the environmental impact (toxic fumes, non-recyclable waste, aerosol dust particles, high consumption of water and electricity, burning of fossil fuels) to a bare minimum.

The equipment also allows for production of the dental ceramic restorations during the same visit, saving on time, transport and most of all benefits the patients as the visit is reduced to one appointment.

Combined with the onsite dental Cone Beam CT scanner, the CAD-CAM equipment is capable of producing custom-made surgical assisted guides for minimally invasive flapless surgery used during dental implant treatment. This is the first of its kind on the island previously having to send the information overseas for fabrication of the surgical guides.

The spa is equipped with a recovery room for patients.
