Malta Independent Thursday, 18 July 2013, 11:59 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Palace and 202 Jewellery have joined forces to take part in an initiative aimed at promoting reading in localities around Malta and Gozo.

This initiative named Book Box – a non profit organisation, brings back to life the traditional red telephone box and transforming them into a small swap library where everyone is welcome to exchange books.

A red telephone booth will be installed at The Palace’s Talk of Town terrace. The Book Box will be accessible to the general public during the day.

The management of The Palace will ensure that the Book Box will always be filled with a variety of books.

“As a hotel, we believe it is also our responsibility to promote reading, so we instantly agreed to help out Book Box. We are also fond of our partners 202 Jewellery who are supporting this initiative”  The Palace and Victoria Hotel manager Kevin Callus said.

“In order for the project to be successful, the wealth lying on the shelves need to be taken care of and along with Book Box, we will be providing the books for this public library and ensure that the phonebooth is stacked with books all the time,” he added.

Although the Book Box initiative is found in other countries like Germany and France, in Malta it all started when English teacher Roberta Genovese was browsing Facebook and came across a picture of a red telephone booth stacked with books.

She immediately contacted her friends and started working on the project. Several other communities  have shown interest to take the project on board.
