Fold out chairs and kitsch Dom Mintoff memorabilia were at the ready this morning, for the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the late former Prime Minister’s legacy outside of his Tarxien residence.
A decidedly senior crowd gathered for the occasion, regaling each other with tales of Mr Mintoff and the good old days.
Proceedings got off to a shaky start, with the public address system cutting off intermittently, but the organisers soldiered on admirably.
The Chairman of the ‘Ghaqda Duminku Mintoff’ reassured all those present that “Mintoff is smiling down on us, and he is glad that he has not been forgotten.”
Spectators were then treated to one of Mr Mintoff’s historic speeches, which was greeted by many a reminiscent smile.
Fr Mark Montebello implored people to pass on Mr Mintoff’s “immortal legend, which depends on us.” He said that people have a responsibility to make sure that “this legend never dies, and is passed on to future generations.”
Mr Mintoff’s daughter, Yana Bland Mintoff, insisted that “we should take the right road, we should take the socialist road.”
