The General Workers’ Union (GWU) Professionals Finance and Services Section has written to the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) requesting urgent consultation in relation to the removal of asbestos roofing adjacent to Mizzi House which will be starting in the next couple of days.
In correspondence sent by Section Secretary Dr Cory Greenland, the Union has reiterated its appreciation for the decision to finally remove the roofing after this had been left pending for several months. However the Union, aware of the dangers involved in removing asbestos materials, has requested that it is kept fully informed and consulted with regards to the process.
To date the Union is still waiting to see a copy of the risk assessment with regards to the removal. Moreover the Union is expecting to see the report on air quality tests carried out in February. Furthermore details of the action plan intended for work deployment during removal and return to main premises have yet not been shared with the GWU. It is vital that the area is confirmed as safe prior to the return of employees to head office.
The GWU appeals for such documentation to be made available and consultation to take place before the works commence.
