Precarious employment is an ever growing wound that continues to worsen the problem of poverty among families where parents and children are suffering, PL MEP Claudette Abela Baldacchino.
Meeting the General Workers Union in talks, she expressed commitment to bring the subject of precarious employment and poverty at the top of the EU agenda.
In the coming days, she will be making a parliamentary question to the European Commission to establish what is taking place on an EU level to fight the phenomenon.
During the meeting Ms Abela Baldacchino discussed her work on EU Parliamentary level after she was appointed spokesperson on the proposal of sailors’ work conditions. This is important for Malta which has the largest ship registry in the EU.
Reacting to her statements, GWU secretary general Tony Zarb announced a seminar on the themes of precarious employment and poverty, on 27 September.
Mr Zarb said the GWU is the only representative of sailors on the island thanks to its affiliation in the European Transport Federation and the International Transport Federation.
Talks on the subject are to continue in the near future.
