The PN has called on the Government to clarify what is happening within the Identità Agency “which, aside from being mired in one scandal after another, has now also seen the sudden resignations of both its Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive in the last few hours.”
The PN quoted a report by The Shift News which reported that the agency’s two highest officials – CEO Steve Agius and Deputy CEO Paula Cauchi Meachen – have mysteriously left the agency together. The agency falls under the remit of Minister Byron Camilleri, and the Government has not denied the news, the PN said.
“The PN asks why two individuals holding the topmost posts at Identità – both of whom were closely linked to Labour – have stepped down from the positions they were appointed to only a year ago. Both Agius and Cauchi Meachen were appointed in 2024 by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri,” the party said.
It demanded that the Government clarify the facts surrounding these abrupt resignations and confirm whether media reports are true – “namely, that the two could no longer carry out their duties due to interference and pressure, including from the Office of the Prime Minister.”
The PN condemned “the way in which, in recent years, the leadership of the Identità Agency has been turned into a Labour Party club, and recalls the various scandals that have plagued this agency – foremost among them the identity card and residence permit scandal, in which a large number of people received mail addressed to individuals who had never lived at their addresses.”
This racket would have continued in secret were it not for a magisterial inquiry that was requested, the party said.
The Opposition thanked all employees at Identità for their work, but said that it expects Minister Camilleri and those running this crucial agency to answer for what is currently taking place within this government entity.
The statement was signed by the PN’s Shadow Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Reforms Darren Carabott.
