Calls not to jump off cliffs fall on deaf ears

Malta Independent Friday, 16 August 2013, 11:38 Last update: about 12 years ago

Calls by the authorities last week not to jump off cliffs or high structures and to adhere to rules displayed on signs on beaches have seemingly fallen on deaf ears, evident from a spate of incidents involving teenagers jumping off into the sea from prohibited and dangerous places.

In a matter of a week, a French 23-year-old woman was rushed to the Gozo General Hospital, after sustaining injuries after jumping from off the Azure Window in Gozo.

The woman was reported to have suffered severe back injuries.

A Maltese teenager also suffered a spinal injury after having jumped into the sea at the Blue Lagoon in Comino. He was assisted by the ERRC's volunteer rescue unit who in turn transported him to Gozo General Hospital.

On 27 July, ERRC lifeguards were also alerted of an accident involving a 15-year-old suffering from spinal injuries.  The accident happened after the victim had jumped off a cliff at Comino.

The link, ‘Malta cliff jumping’, was posted on youtube on 12 August which shows amateur footage, ironically accompanied by the Bee Gees song ‘Stayin Alive’, of a group of foreign students jumping off all sorts of platforms into the sea, including off boats and cliffs, while in Malta.
