It is understood that former Coventry City striker and Malta national team captain Michael Mifsud may end up playing in the Australia A-League after all. The report, by author Aidan Ormond, appeared on football site four- fourtwo.com yesterday, stating that the 32-year-old international, currently part of Malta’s World Cup squad, is being looked at by at least one club in Australia. Mifsud is a free agent after departing Maltese club Valletta in the European off-season two years into the five year deal.

According to the Maltese clubs statement at the time, Michael Mifsud had expressed his desire to pursue playing opportunities abroad. An amicable settlement was reached followed talks between club and player. Mifsud had been without a club since and has made his appearance for Malta in the last two home World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Bulgaria. Mifsud scored a brace at Old Trafford, eliminating Manchester United from the third round of the Carling Cup in 2007. The diminutive captain of the Malta national team scored for Malta against Armenia in a famous victory in June this year, the first victory in World Cup qualifying for Malta in 20 years. Mifsud is a Maltese football hero who is closing in on 100 appearances for his national and is their all-time leading scorer.

One of few Maltese footballers to have played abroad, he has previously been on the books of Kaiserslautern, Lillestrom as well as Coventry. Mifsud told FIFA.com this week: “I’ve been giving some thought to my next career move. I don’t want to get it wrong. I’m currently in discussions with some foreign clubs. We’ll see what happens. “Im 32, but as long as my body al-lows me to play, I’ll keep going. As for motivation, well, I’ll always have that.”
